-
The Field: Ultimate is played on a field similar in size and utility to a football field. A regulation field is 70 yards long, 40 yards wide, and has endzones 20 yards in depth.
-
Initiate Play: After each point is scored, teams line up on opposite endzone lines, and the disc is put into play by the scoring team “pulling” to the other, receiving team.
-
Scoring: One point is scored when a team obtains possession of the disc inside the 20x40 yard endone that they are attacking.
-
Movement of the Disc: The disc moves around the field by passes only. As in basketball, a player may not run while holding the disc, and must maintain one point of contact, called a pivot, with the ground at all times. When a defender is within a 10 foot range of the thrower, he/she may audibly impose a stall count of 10 seconds, the end of which forces the disc to change possession to the opposite team.
-
Change of Possession: Turnovers occur when the stall count reaches 10 seconds, the disc touches the ground before being caught, the disc is intercepted by the defending team, the disc touches a surface that is out of bounds, and when a point is scored. In every situation but the last, the defending team picks up the disc where it was last in play, and assumes the offensive role.
-
Substitutions: Seven players per team play on the field per point, and may only be substituted out between points, when an injury occurs, or when a timeout is called.
-
Non-Contact: Players are not allowed to contact one another to affect a play, either intentionally or incidentally. When this happens, a foul occurs.
-
Fouls: If contact between players disrupts possession, play is resumed as if the foul had not occurred.
-
Self-Officiating: All fouls and infractions are disputed and resolved by the players on the field.
-
Spirit of the Game: SOTG is an expectation that all players involved practice fairness and respect, regardless of how competitive the game gets, or the result.
